Picture Boot Camp: October 6, 2018

Canadian author, Uma Krishnaswami

The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Fresno State will host award-winning Canadian author Uma Krishnaswami and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators’ Picture Book Boot Camp this fall.

The Picture Book Boot Camp, for authors and illustrators of all levels, will feature editor Ariel Richardson from publisher Chronicle Books. Richardson will provide insider tips on what it takes to get your book published.

Picture Boot Camp

  • Saturday, October 2, 2018 in Room 2206, Henry Madden Library

    • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Picture Boot Camp.
    • 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Krishnaswami’s talk.
  • Registration is required for the boot camp.
  • Parking is unrestricted and recommended in lots P30 and P31, closest to the library.

SCBWI members and nonmembers interested in attending the boot camp, must register and pay on the SCBWI’s website. All are welcome. Registration fees are $35 for members and $45 for nonmembers. The boot camp will begin at 10 a.m. and last until noon. Morning coffee and refreshments will be available.

Krishnaswami’s talk, which is free and open to the public, will round out the SCBWI program starting at 1 p.m. For over 20 years, Krishnaswami has written picture books, chapter books, early readers and novels for young readers. She has spoken to audiences in the U.S., Canada, India, Singapore and Hong Kong. Her books have been translated into 11 languages.

Her latest middle grade novel, “Step Up to the Plate, Maria Singh,” was the award winner of the 2018 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, Children’s Literature. Many of her picture books, including “Bright Sky, Starry City,” have received rave reviews in Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal and Horn Book journals. Her books will be available for sale and signing after the talk. Light refreshments will be served.
