Please join the Arne Nixon Center in welcoming award-winning author, and the Arne Nixon Center’s second Artist-in-Residence, Maya Christina Gonzalez.

Maya Christina Gonzalez is an illustrator, author, progressive educator, activist and publisher who was awarded the second Arne Nixon Center’s Artist-in-Residence Fellowship prize. She will be in Fresno the week of September 25 - 29 and will work with Fresno State students and the community to bring greater awareness to young adult literature. All events are free and open to the public!

Events are sponsored by the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature, the Henry Madden Library, the Cross Cultural and Gender Center, and the Center for Creativity and the Arts. The Artist-in-Residence program is made possible by a generous donation from an anonymous donor.

Workshop (Free)

Voice is a Revolution: Personal Healing to Change the Larger Narrative

  • 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017
  • Room 140 in the Kremen Education Building at Fresno State
  • Lunch is provided by the Arne Nixon Center Advocates.

Participants are asked to bring a photo of themselves. This begins the journey. Using exercises from her Claiming Face curriculum, Gonzalez leads people through beautiful portraits to personal stories and finally toward larger healing narratives as the day’s workshop progresses. No creative experience or proclivity necessary, only the call to attend and claim your voice.

NOTE: It is important that you are present for the full day. This workshop is most effective when you attend the entire time. If you are unable to attend the full workshop, please leave space for others to attend.

Gonzalez' presentation includes a brief overview of the United States children's book industry in relation to voices from historically marginalized communities and its impact on all of our children. She illustrates the very real need for change through and beyond the industry and provides a holistic and practical grassroots vision that educators and parents can begin implementing to effectively create new and inclusive possibilities for our children.
