Map and Aerial Photographs

The map collection has worldwide coverage with a focus on California and the Central Valley. Of special interest are our aerial photographs, primarily of Fresno County, which date back to 1937. We also have large collections of atlases and gazetteers. The core map collection consists of maps published by U.S. federal and California state agencies such as the US and California Geological Surveys, most of which are acquired through the U.S. and California depository library programs.

We are open to the public and welcome community use of our resources.

Location and Hours

  • The Map and Aerial Photographs service desk is on the First Floor of the library building, North Wing.
  • The service desk hours are by appointment.
  • With advance notice, arrangements may be made to use most material in the closed area at other times.

Collections

Aerial Photographs

Photographs in many of our aerial flights can be located via Map and Aerial Locator Tool (MALT). You may also use the Aerial Photo Request form (PDF) to request that we search for avialiable photographs of a specific site.

The aerial photographs are in a closed area and will be retrieved for you at the Map and Aerial service desk. Most of our aerial photographs have been digitized and are available through MALT.

Maps

Many maps can be located through the library catalog, however, individual sheets in most topographic series are not listed. Our maps are in a closed area and will be retrieved for you at the Maps desk. Most maps can be borrowed for use outside the library.

Atlas and Gazeteers

Our Atlases and gazetteers can be identified via the library catalog and are on open shelves, near the service desk.
