Roy J. Woodward (1878-1940) was a prominent Fresno businessman who amassed an extensive collection of books on California history with a particular emphasis on California missions, early pioneers and travel accounts. In 1950, ten years after his death, his collection was donated to the library by his grandchildren, O. James Woodward III, Beverly Woodward, Barry O’Connor, Ramona Walker, and Patricia Ronald.
His collection, the Roy J. Woodward Memorial Library of Californiana, provided the impetus to create a special collections department at the Fresno State library and is now a major cornerstone of the Special Collections Research Center, used by many students and researchers near and far. The books listed here are from Roy J. Woodward's original, personal collection.
