Reflection One for Hiromi’s Hands
This analysis was accomplished in December 2023 using the following prompt template .
Analysis Summary
This could be impactful to the students in my classroom because Japanese culture is not represented correctly. Children should feel that their culture is represented through the books and stories they read. If different cultures are misrepresented in children;s stories, this could lead to stereotypes of different cultures. Authors need to be respectful and do their research when writing for children.
Impact Assessment
Japanese culture misconceptions. My focal student would most likely not know much about Japanese culture. They would agree with what is being said in the story and not know what true Japanese heritage looks like.
My focal student comes from a different ethnic background and could benefit from learning more about different cultures of the many people of this world. Children should be able to read diverse and accurate representations of many cultures to build their understanding and respect for the many cultures in our communities.
